ELEMENTS OF CAPE DUTCH ARCHITECTRE:
THE DOVECOT

MEERLUST:The second remaining example of a dovecot is located on Meerlust farm just South of Stellenbosch. The plaster is rough and the building located in a shady forested area.

ENTRANCE GATES
This is the gateway at Morgenhof farm just north of the Stellenbosch. It is typical of the curved walls that were constructed to demarcate the entrance to the farms, and would echo stylistic elements from the main buildings. See GLITZYMAGAZINE for characteristic elements of Cape Dutch architecture.
Another example of the curved gate walls and heavy wrought iron gates that typically marked the entrance to the farms.

LOW WERF WALL
These walls aproximately 1m high surrounded the gardens and yards and provide a subtle architectural link between the various buildings. Werf was the Dutch word for "yard."

ZEVENWACHT - neoclassical style
Decidedly neoclassical in style, the gable has a pari of horns on the outer pilasters and a pair of urns on the innner ones. The window in the gable is a perfect square and creates a focal point for the facade. Visit ARCHITECTCAPETOWN for more luxurious designs by this Cape Town designer.
BELL TOWER - at Rustenberg Farm
This photograph also shows the low werf wall which demarcated different garden areas of the property. Cape Dutch farms ususally have a bell tower that is built in a style complimenting the main gable of the main house. See also GLITZYMAGAZINE for more examples of modern house design in the area.
CELLAR BUILDING - at Webersburg Farm
The cellar building at Webersberg demonstrates many features of the outbuildings... the simple holbol side-gables, the lawned yards with low surround walls and the careful placement in the landscape. Or visit CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR for architects designing contemporary houses in the area.
