EARLY HOLBOL GABLES
The first Cape Dutch gables were a simple concave-convex shape known locally as "Holbol" gables. This example is at Blaauwklippen farm in Stellenbosch.

BAROQUE GABLES
As time went on the plaster bands on the holbol gables became more and more elaborate and sweeping over the front of the gable. Shell-like motifs and garlands became popular decorations.

NEOCLASSICAL GABLES
Over time a preference for less decoratioin and a centralised protruding section supporting a curved or triangular pediment development, known as the neoclassical style.

This example is interesting because the columns don't run the full height of the facade and are more of a superficial decoration as it were.

By straightening the gables of traditional Cape Dutch buildigns, the Modern Cape Dutch style arose. No-one knows who designed these first, but Denis Moss architects was one of the originals to embrace the style.
