DUTCH PALLADIAN BUILDINGS
The first colonial buildings at the Cape were modelled after a fairly standard type of European fortress style architecture known as Dutch Palladian...refering to the villa that Palladio built.

KOOPMANS DE WET HOUSE
Also in the dutch Palladian style, the Koopmans' De West house is a well preserved example of early architecture in the City Center and this building served as a precessor to Cape Dutch buildings to follow.

HOLBOL GABLES - EMERGENCE OF THE CAPE DUTCH STYLE
"Holbol" gables were a simple concave-convex shaped roof structures that began to emerge in the Cape at the end of the 1600's . Blaauwklippen farm shown here.

BO KAAP MUSEUM
Although not containing a gable, the bo-kaap museum is regarded as one of the earliest Cape Dutch buildings showing the sensibility to symmetrical door and window design that was to follow. Most of the bo kaap houses are actually regarded as being Georgian in style.

BAROQUE GABLES - EARLY CAPE DUTCH
Shell-like motifs, sweeping plasterbands and garlands are the distinctive features of he Baroque Cape Dutch Style. This house at Morgenster is one of the best preserved examples.

The gable at Webersburg This gable has a shell motif at well as the typical sweeping baroque plasterbands over the the gable surface.

NEOCLASSICAL GABLES - LATE CAPE DUTCH GABLES
The neoclassical style is distinctive with its pediment supported by shallow columns called pillasters. The style is more restrained with decoration than the baroque style gables.

VREDE EN LUST
This sturdy neoclassical cape dutch gable is located on the Western foothills of Simonsberg mountain on a farm called "Vrede en Lust".

GEORGIAN STYLE ARCHITECTURE
The Georgian style is characterised by flat roofs with a flat parapet lining the roof-edge. Vertical sliding-sash windows punctuate the facades.

BERTRAM HOUSE
Bertram House is also regarded as Georgian although it lacks a flat parpapet in favour of eaves on a hipped roof. Also unusual for this style are the face-bricks.

BAROQUE
This style emerged after the Cape Dutch style but before the Georgian and Victorian styles. The Jewish musuem is one of the best preserved and most accessible examples, and is located adjacent to the Company Gardens.

MONUMENT ARCHITECTURE
